I woke with a start in the pitch dark and checked my phone. Six-thirty AM. For God’s sake, couldn’t I manage a lie-in even on the weekend? But I’d always been like that. Didn’t even need to set an alarm, because I woke up at exactly the same time every day, regardless of pesky details like day of the week or amount of alcohol consumed the previous evening.
And the hammering in my head was telling me I’d definitely boozed it up more than usual. Oh yes. The Valentine’s meal with my sister. All that bubbly, and then rum chasers back in our room. I was in a hotel. That’s why the light levels were different to normal. They had proper black-out blinds here.
I eased back into bed, not wanting to wake Michelle.
Michelle snuffled in her sleep.
Hang on a minute, that didn’t sound anything like Michelle.
Horrified, I lay there, the events of the previous night returning to me. I was still here, in Rod’s room. My flank was tight with dried spunk—Rod’s spunk—and my muscles were aching from one of the most incredible nights of passion I’d ever experienced. With a man I wanted to see more of.
With a man I’d lied to the entire time.
Bollocks.
It wasn’t like we could exchange phone numbers now. Not when he was thinking I was some international jet-setting writer. And besides, what was the point? Hadn’t he said he lived the other side of the country? And there was me, still living and working in the tiny Somerset town I’d grown up in.
No, best to make a quiet exit. I got out of bed gingerly, careful not to disturb Rod. I found my clothes on the floor next to the bed by touch alone and dressed as silently as I was able.
His breathing remained deep and slow.
I checked my pocket for my replacement key card, picked up my phone, slunk out of Rod’s room and closed the door as quietly as I was able.
And Michelle was still bloody well snoring when I got back to my room.
No one knew I’d had my first ever one night stand. Even Rod thought I was an experienced player. For some reason, that thought made me feel more lonely than I ever had before.
Valentine’s Day really was the most depressing holiday ever.
